BALDWIN PARK

SERVICES PROVIDED:

The Orlando Naval Training Center served as the training site for over 650,000 Navy recruits from the early 1960's to the early 1990's.  In 1998 the NTC was decomissioned as a result of a federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission decision.  The shutdown left Orlando with a thousand-acre "hole in the heart of the city," as one observer noted.

An Urban Design Vision Plan was created which established a program of 3,000-dwelling units and 2.7 million square feet of commercial and employment uses on the 1,100-acre site.  The resulting community includes nearly 200 acres of public parks and 250 acres of public lakes. In 2006 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency honored Baldwin Park with a Phoenix Award for Excellence in Environmental Redevelopment. Additionally, Baldwin Park was recognized as the largest single-phase demolition and recycling project in history.
